Vibe Coding vs. Systems Thinking

Vibe coding (building software just by describing your intent to an AI) feels like magic. But it's also a psychological trap.

If you don't consciously practice systems thinking, your app will quickly turn into an unmaintainable mess.

Tools like Cursor and Claude are incredible at localized optimization. Tell them to build a component, and you get one instantly. Psychologically, this is highly rewarding. It offers immediate gratification and allows for "cognitive offloading", where we let the machine do the heavy lifting so our brains don't have to.

But this triggers what behavioral scientists call the illusion of explanatory depth. Because we generated the working code so easily, we falsely believe we understand how the underlying system actually operates.

We usually don't.

The AI built an isolated component, not a cohesive system. Let's say you ask the AI to build a Stripe checkout. It looks great and works perfectly on the happy path. But because the AI lacks holistic context, it doesn't handle the edge case where a webhook drops or fails. The user is charged, but their account tier isn't updated in your database. The component succeeded, but the system failed.

When the app inevitably breaks, the illusion shatters. Debugging requires tracing inputs and outputs across boundaries. If you've been vibe coding on autopilot, you don't have that mental model. You're flying blind.

This creates a massive business risk. Human-generated technical debt is bad, but at least the human remembers how the bad code works. When AI writes bad code and you blindly accept it, literally nobody understands it. When you need to scale or pivot, your engineering velocity drops to absolute zero.

The solution isn't to stop using AI. It's to realize our job has changed. We aren't syntax writers anymore; we are systems architects.

We have to consciously override our brain's preference for cognitive ease. We need to intentionally engage in the slow, deliberate work of mapping state, defining boundaries, and understanding data flows before we start prompting.

Vibe coding lowers the floor for building products. Systems thinking raises the ceiling.
